Tips for self tanning your face
Applying fake tan to your body is relatively straightforward, but when it comes to applying tan to your face, it can be quite daunting. There's nowhere to hide any mistakes you make around any of the crevices around your eyes, nose, mouth and ears, so in order to make sure that you achieve the smoothest possible application, we've put together a few tips for applying fake tan to your face properly.
Prep your face the same way you would your body
The day before you apply your fake tan to your face, make sure that you use an oil-free, gentle scrub to exfoliate with to remove any dead skin cells from your face. Don't scrub too vigorously as this will damage your delicate skin; simply move the scrub in small, gentle circular strokes around your face. It's important to remember when prepping your face that your facial skin is naturally oily, which creates a natural barrier against fake tan so it's best to steer clear of any oily products.
Close your pores
If you've ever experienced a 'spotty'-looking fake tan, you'll know how annoying it is when the formula settles in your pores. To combat this, try rubbing an ice cube over your face to make your pores contract and appear smaller. If you don't have any ice to hand, soak your face in some cold water before applying your tan. Not only will this help your tan to apply evenly but it will also prevent it from clogging your pores and causing annoying breakouts. Don't forget to dry your face before applying your fake tan, though!
Apply tan to your ears and hairline
To make sure that your tan looks as natural as possible, it's important that you apply it to any areas that the sun would hit naturally, including your ears and hairline.
Instead of applying a thick layer of fake tan to your ears, use any leftover product to smooth over them. This will give them a hint of colour without looking too dark, but make sure that you apply the tan to the back of the ears and the earlobes, too.
Anyone who regularly uses fake tanner will know that a white line along the hairline is a dead giveaway that someone is wearing fake tan. To avoid this, make sure that you rub your tan up and into the hairline and ensure that every spot is covered.
