How to avoid a spray tan disaster
A bad spray tan can make you feel really self-conscious - especially if you were spray tanning in advance of a big event. But those post-tan blues can be avoided if you know what to do.
Patchy, uneven spray tans are not always down to the application. A good tan technician will give you advice on how to avoid these things, but ultimately it is up to you to prep and maintain your tan to ensure it remains perfect for as long as possible. So let's take a look at the most common disasters and offer some spray tanning advice on how you can prevent them.
Streaking and patchiness
Streaking can be caused by the technician if they have their spray tanning machine on a setting that is too high, causing the tan to run down the body. If you have prepped properly beforehand, most of the excess tan should wash off in the shower to leave a beautiful golden glow. However, a patchy tan is more likely caused by you. Remember to shave at least 24 hours beforehand and to exfoliate thoroughly to create a smooth base before you reach the salon. Don't wear any moisturiser or oils as they create a barrier to the tan. If you do all this and are still suffering from a streaky tan, there might be an ingredient in your shampoo or conditioner that affects the result.
Discolouration
There is nothing worse than a green tan! This can be caused by a few things, including the spray tanning solution being out of date. It should wash off to leave a golden glow, but it is worth mentioning to the salon, since it is unlikely to last as long as it should. Green tans can also be caused by deodorant, so be sure not apply any in the lead up to your tan appointment.
Orange palms
Before spray tanning, your technician should apply a barrier cream to the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet, since these areas are a little drier than the rest of your body and tend to grab too much of the tan, leaving them looking orange. They may also choose to put a little cream on your knees and elbows for an even glow.
