When it comes to pregnancy, there is lots to think about and lots to worry about. You crave new things, give up favourite habits, but what about your use of fake tan? The good news is you don't need to give up fake tanning completely and to help lessen your anxiety, we've put together a guide on pregnancy and fake tan.

Can I use fake tan creams or lotions?

Tan comes in a variety of forms, and it's generally known to be safe to use fake tan lotions or creams during your pregnancy. The ingredient used within fake tan is called DHA and this is non-toxic solution that isn't known to go beyond the outer layer of your skin, thus unable to harm your baby.

Can I use spray tan?

It's generally recommended to avoid spray tans due to the unknown effects of inhaling the solution from the spray. However, many spray tanning salons or at home users can wear a mask to avoid inhalation. Even so, it's not recommended you start spray tanning while pregnant until after your first trimester. This is simply because the first three months are a sensitive period of pregnancy where extra caution is required with all types of products that are applied directly to the skin - not just spray tan. It's best to wait until after the first trimester to try any products on your skin.

Will being pregnant affect the outcome of my fake tan?

In the majority of cases, your self-tan should be unaffected by the fact that you’re pregnant. However, due to the hormonal changes in your body, sometimes your skin's sensitivity may vary. If it's your first time experiencing spray tanning while pregnant, it's best to do a small patch test 48 hours before you complete the full body - just to make sure you don't have a reaction.
